This Is Me

Amanda Graham

Amanda is British but considers herself very much a citizen of the world. Born and brought up by adoptive parents in the North of England she left for Africa in her early twenties with a little experience of the psycho-therapeutic world.  Since then Amanda has lived in several countries in Africa, Malaysia, the Middle East, England and most recently South West France.

Her work experience in the therapeutic domain is difficult to write about succinctly because much of the experience she has gained has been in a challenging environment outside the remit of what might be considered the regular mental health domain.

Her early career was very much involved with helping young people and adults with issues preventing them from getting work, she went on to work with people in Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe at the height of the AIDS pandemic.  When she returned to England with a young family in the nineties she worked for two private training companies, again managing young people aged between 16-24 who were from difficult backgrounds such as abuse, addiction or prison.

Amanda began her journey exploring the alternative healing modalities to regular psychological interventions as she felt labels and diagnoses were not helping her clients to manage their issues.  Twenty years later, five in Malaysia, numerous training courses and completing her Masters in Mental Health Psychology she has come to a place where she incorporates most (not all) of the modalities she has learned over the past two decades to deliver her own unique approach to each client when she works with them.

Amanda’s journey to becoming the Compassionate Movement Psychologist she is today is deeply embedded in her rich life experiences, the teachers she has had along the way as well as her academic learning.  Amanda’s aim is to be able to reach as many people as possible through the virtual communities here at Praana Wellness to enable her to support and guide people through these challenging times.

Timeline

I spend as much time as I can in Nature, my ‘cure-all’, with my Rhodesian Ridgebacks and family (when I am able) and I am truly grateful for the life I have had and the opportunity to support others because of this.

This is Me.

From Amanda:

I have been a member of the Buddhist Society for 20 years and draw on my spiritual support from them through my continuous learning, yoga and meditation practise.  I have most recently trained with Dr Gabor Maté in his line of Compassionate professional inquiry into trauma and it’s sometimes life-long effects on people’s behaviour.  I have found a confidence in his teachings that show that the best therapeutic approach doesn’t always have to come from a classroom.

I seem to have been a constant renovator of beautiful old properties and take my ‘therapy’ in immersing myself in their restoration as well as designing and developing beautiful gardens.  I am a traveller, a Nomad and am beginning to feel as though my travel wings want to open again! People and human connectivity is my life, it’s what we as humans thrive on and now long for.
